The Office for National Statistics (ONS) calculates population figures for every local authority in the UK. Estimates are produced annually broken down by age and gender for the previous year, and are known as ‘Mid-Year Estimates’ because they refer to the mid-point of the year.

Mid-2007 (the latest) ward population estimates for the UK from ONS broken down by age and gender
Future: ONS has produced population projections for every local authority by age and gender every two years. The projections are trend-based, which means they show what the population will be if recent trends in births, deaths and movements in and out of the borough (as calculated in the ONS population estimates up to 2006) continue. Unfortunately they do not factor in the large increases in residential properties that are expected to be built in the next 20 years across East London. more.. www.statistics.gov.uk/STATBASE/Product.asp?vlnk=8519 |

Ethnicity and Religious Profile
Borough Profiler: The Census 2001 provides the most detailed information on ethnicity and religion across East London. ONS provide more up to date population figures on ethnicity by local authority and gender, the latest being published in 2005. Another useful source of up to date information on ethnicity is the Multicultural Atlas of London which is part of the London Profiler. The atlas is based on an innovative technique to classify populations through the origin of their forenames and surnames as a proxy for their probable ethnicity.

Index of Multiple Deprivation: The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 (ID 2007) was published by the Department of Communities and Local Government in December 2007 and updates an earlier deprivation index published in 2004. ID 2007 was calculated by collecting data for 37 indicators for seven main topic areas or domains, each measuring a different aspect of deprivation. Results from the seven domains were then combined into an overall Index of Multiple Deprivation. ID 2007 is worked out on Super Output areas (SOAs).
The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2007 combines a number of indicators, chosen to cover a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single deprivation score for each small area in England. This allows each area to be ranked relative to one another according to their level of deprivation. As with the 2004 Indices, the Indices of Deprivation 2007 have been produced at Lower Super Output Area level, of which there are 32,482 in the country.
